Jounouchi wondered for a moment what it would be like to see Kaiba shaken, really shaken. Despite the danger, Kaiba’s face was completely without expression. Was that even natural?

Once the staff had been summoned to Kaiba’ s hotel room, Jounouchi sat in the corner, twiddling his thumbs as Kaiba quietly gave orders to security. The man was a miracle of self control. As hard as he stared, Jounouchi could not for the life of him glimpse a single shred of emotion peeking through that blank mask. There was a surprising kind of beauty to those movements. With every sentence, dozens lost their jobs, egos were smashed and lives shattered.

Not that it wasn’t a proportional response. Hell, seeing that bomb had been one of the single most frightening experiences of his (admittedly short) life. Conceited bastard could at least look worried. How could a human being not crumple under the weight of all that stress?

And yet there’d been that flash of fear and shock when he’d seen that tiny little mess of electronics. One fraction of a second, and he saw that Kaiba Seto was just as human as anyone else. It was just beyond comprehension. He was angry too; the knuckles of the hand grasping the telephone were white with tension. Jounouchi could practically see the circuits firing in that mechanical mind of his, analyzing all possible suspects.

Finally Kaiba coldly dismissed the shame-faced security guards. They were alone. A long silence passed between them, and Jounouchi sneaked a side-ways glance at him. Kaiba was staring straight ahead at the wall, his hands intertwined and clenched tightly. An itch started up between his shoulder blades, and despite the growing discomfort, he refused to scratch it, refused to move until the stuck-up prick deigned to grace him with a word.

The longer the silence dragged on, the more Jounouchi wanted to break it, and the more awkward it became to do so. Another glance at Kaiba revealed that he hadn’t changed his position at all.

“God dammit,” Jounouchi said finally. He glared at the CEO. “Well then? You ready to let us know what’s going on?” Kaiba’s eyes flashed angrily in his direction.

“I don’t have to explain myself to you of all people,” he snarled. Jounouchi studied him carefully, and thought he could detect a distinct tone of nervousness in Kaiba’s voice. More confident in himself now, Jounouchi stood and then pointedly sat on the bed, a mere few inches away from the other man.

“You know who planted that bomb, don’t you?” said Jounouchi. He watched as Kaiba grew slightly pale and then smirked back at him.

“I have everything under control here. Just do as you’re told.” Before Jounouchi could protest, there was a buzz on the intercom. Kaiba immediately switched it to the phone and picked it up. He listened attentively for a moment before making an affirmative sound. “I’ll see him in a few minutes,” he said quiet and placed the receiver carefully back on the hook. “You can leave now,” he added to Jounouchi, not even bothering to look at him.

Jounouchi departed in a huff. Yeah, it was his job to protect Kaiba, but if the bastard just wanted him for show then what the hell was he supposed to do?

His footsteps were completely muffled as he made his way down the hotel’s hallway. Once he’d reached the end, he heard a door open. He only just caught a glimpse of someone walking into Kaiba’s room before it shut with a click. Of all the… he didn’t have a single loyal person in there with him. What the hell was Kaiba thinking? Forgetting his resolve to let the other man stew in his own mess, Jounouchi rushed back, throwing the door open. “Everything under control, boss?”
